What a great event Subud Greater Seattle created on Sunday, December 22, 2013, our annual Holiday Party! Hadiyah Carlyle did much of the organizing and made some phone calls to members who live far from Seattle, (such as Frederick and Melanie Branchflower), David Lynch and Jim O’Halloran performed on guitar and flute respectively, Hadijah Obar and Annie Padilla helped provide food (along with many member potluck dishes including authentic Cuban picadillo) and long-time members (& recent transplants to Seattle) Halstein & Ida Stralberg, and Sebastian & Lorraine Tedrow told Subud stories.

Halstein and Ida talked about becoming acquainted with Subud. Halstein said he was a spiritual seeker at age 16, was opened in Subud at 18 and became a helper not much after that. Lorraine talked about the effort to acquire the house now known as the Subud House in Seattle. She said Lawrence and Rosanna Krauss carried the $23K mortgage because traditional financing was not available to the fledgling Subud Seattle community. She mentioned a book by Rosanna Krauss about the early days of Subud in Seattle, which go back to 1961, and said we will celebrate 40 years in the house in February 2014.

I took extensive notes and hope to make a more detailed post about these talks sometime. Better yet, interviews with all these folks and Chuck and Anne Cary, early Subud Seattle members, would be ideal. Please have any elders interested in doing an interview contact me at pen (at) splab (dot) org or call (206) 422.5002.

Also, for anyone who took photos of this past event, please send a few choice ones to me. Thanks, Paul Nelson.

December Events (A Day of Forgiveness)

Posts here have already covered two important December events at the Subud House in Seattle, but here is a little more information on the second one. The Holiday Party is Sunday, Dec 22, which is 27 hours after the exact time of the Winter Solstice.

A Day of Forgiveness on Sunday, December 29 is open to all Subud members and the structure of the day is:

1. Fast (abstain from food, or stimulants, or food and water) as one feels is correct for them beginning at the time that is correct for them.
2. General Latihan starts at 1100 (quiet time).
3. Latihan for the healing and forgiveness of the members of the group immediately following general Latihan; helpers to ask at the start of the Latihan that it be dedicated to the healing and forgiveness of the members of the group.
4. Everyone join in the main room so that people may speak if they desire
5. Break the fast together.

Jim & Lucinda will bring soup;  Hadidjah O’Bar is organizing food. You are welcome to bring a dish. This is seen to be a first step at creating greater harmony at Subud Greater Seattle and we hope to see you there.

Holiday Party & Day of Forgiveness

Day of Forgiveness

Day of Forgiveness

Holiday Party Dec 22 after latihan. We will be honoring the Stralbergs and Tedrows, old time members who have recently joined our group. Annie Padilla and Hadijah O’Bar are coordinating the food for this event. Please call Hadijah O’Bar if you would like to contribute. 425-246-9242.

Day of Healing and Forgiveness, Sunday Dec 29. Just prior to the New Year the helpers of Subud Greater Seattle invite all members and former members to a Kedjiwan day of healing and forgiveness.

Those who would like to participate would fast in the morning in the most appropriate way for you and come to the Seattle Subud House for the Sunday latihan at 11 am. Before the latihan begins the helpers will offer a prayer that this latihan will be one of healing for our group. After the latihan is over everyone would break fast together.

Through this effort we hope that our center may enter the New Year fresh and unencumbered.

Note: This invitation is extended to all members and former members of Subud Greater Seattle. If you cannot attend, we hope you will join us through fasting and prayer for our center.
