Co-Sponsors include: SICA (Subud International Cultural Association)

Ian Boyden will give a presentation of the two artist books he’s made with Sam: Habitations and Edible Earth. He’ll talk about the ways these books came to be, ideas that coalesced in their making, his contributions to the projects as an artist and bookmaker, and some thoughts about collaboration. Sam Hamill will read from his new chapbook Border Songs published by Word Palace Press (www.wordpalacepress.com) and, perhaps, from Habitations. This event is presented by SPLAB in association with SICA, the Subud International Cultural Association.

Bios:
Sam Hamill is Founding Editor of Copper Canyon Press, where he edited and printed for 32 years while writing more than forty volumes of poetry, essays, and celebrated translations from ancient Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Latin, and Estonian. In January 2003, declining an invitation to the Bush White House, he founded Poets Against The War, compiling the largest single-theme anthology in all of history—30,000 poems by 26,000 poets—now archived at Ohio State University. His most recent books include Border Songs (Word Palace Press), Almost Paradise: Selected Poems and Translations (Shambhala Publications) and Measured by Stone (Curbstone Press). “Sam Hamill has reached the category of a National Treasure, though I doubt he’d like the idea.” —Jim Harrison “The shape of Sam Hamill’s mind is the shape of both a revolutionary and a monk at work. His sacred text is poetry.” —Terry Tempest Williams “No one—I mean no one ever—has done the momentous work of presenting poetry better than Sam Hamill… [his poetry] is no less than essential.” —Hayden Carruth

Ian Boyden is an artist and writer currently working in the Blue Mountains southeast of Walla Walla, Washington. Boyden’s practice, in both his paintings and books, displays a fundamental drive to link the literary, material, and visual imagination. He makes his own paints and inks from unusual materials such as meteorites, shark teeth, and freshwater pearls. He often works in collaboration with other writers, artists, and scientists. His work has been exhibited widely and is found in many public collections including Reed College, the Portland Art Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Suzhou Museum. Subud gathering on Salt Spring, Oct 26-28

Subud Western Regional Gathering
Salt Spring Island
OCTOBER 26 – 28, 2012

Following the success of the Americas Gathering, there has been a renewed interest in
coming together for Western Regional Gatherings this fall. Luckily, the beautiful Salt Spring
Island Centre of Yoga is still available for the weekend of Friday, October 26 to Sunday,
October 28. Described as a sanctuary for body and soul, the Centre’s cozy turn-of-the-

century farmhouse and studio buildings are located on 70 acres of meadows, forest and
organic gardens, and our food will be grown and harvested fresh from their own land.

This is an opportunity to treat yourself to a healing environment that provides time for quiet,
reflection and rest, and to gather with your Subud brothers and sisters for a weekend of
kejiwaan and community. The Western Regional Helpers, together with the Salt Spring Island
Group, are happy to host and welcome you here.
Twenty-four beds are available on-site in a combination of shared and single rooms (see
registration form for costs). Saturday ONE DAY Drop-Ins are also possible.  Please indicate
your choice on the attached Registration Form.

In order to hold our reservation, the Centre needs a minimum of 15 pre-paid full-weekend
reservations by September 24. So, please notify DAVE & HELENA HITCHCOCK by email or
phone (hitch@shaw.ca or 250 370 1291) as soon as possible if you wish to attend, and mail
them your completed registration form and cheque straight away to confirm your booking.

For more information about the SSI Centre of Yoga, check out their website at:

Looking forward to seeing you all again

Your Western Regional Helpers and the Salt Springers!

PNW Regional Meeting (Elect a New Chair)

Hello Everybody,

Regional Congress: Sept 22nd – Seattle Subud House
Due to many meetings running over and PNW members being involved in various aspects of the National Congress we decided to postpone the Regional Congress until September 22nd, in Seattle.  I hope this hasn’t caused any inconvenience, if so my sincere apologies.

This Congress we will be testing in a new chair and vice chair – if you have any interest or questions about these jobs, feel free to email me or give me a call (206.331.5960)

Congratulations to Daniel Stralberg (and SUBUDUSA) as he has been tested in as National Treasurer. He has passed the reins to Sherwin O’Bar –  Thanks Sherwin for joining the regional committee as our new treasurer and providing support for this important job.

Family Camp:
Forms and information can be found on the SUBUDPNW website (http://subudpnw.org) which I have just now updated – If you’d like paper forms or have any trouble downloading the forms, email me and I’ll provide any assistance needed.

Menucha: November 8th – 12th
We are working on working out online registration – I’ll send a notification when this is ready – thanks for your patience.

Much love,

Ramon –

SUBUD PNW Chair.

The greenest commercial building on earth rises in Seattle

Our neighbor:

The Bullitt Center not only set its sights very high; it is having a ripple effect on suppliers of building materials.

When EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson visited Seattle last month for a talk at UW’s graduation, there was one visit she and her staff weren’t interested in promoting. On Saturday morning, just before the graduation, she and a few of her staffers made an unpublicized stop at 15th and Madison. (The low profile was to avoid distracting attention from her graduation speech.)
